Help save downtown live music and events! 

Our dream for Common Fields has always been one of community, local artists, community events, and giving back to the community through charitable giving programs. We opened in 2020 with this mission in mind and have seen our business blossom. We recently have had a single resident complain about noise enough to deeply impact our business operations. We seek a common sense, objective law to provide more fairness and stability for residents and businesses.
We have created a petition proposing changes to the local Corvallis City Noise Ordinance. The proposed changes replaces the previous subjective "plainly audible" standard for enforcement, especially concerning music, with objective, measurable criteria, aiming to support Corvallis’ music culture and economy. The changes aim to create a more transparent and equitable enforcement system for both residents and businesses.
Key Changes

• Objective Standards:
  The reform moves away from the previous subjective "plainly audible" standard to objective, measurable decibel levels, leveraging technology like mobile phone sound measurement capabilities. 
• Music-Focused:
  The changes are designed to be more supportive of Corvallis’ music scene.
• Fairness and Transparency:
  The new code aims to create an inclusive,  transparent, and equitable enforcement system for both residents and businesses. 

Purpose and Impact

• Support for the Arts and Economy:
• By creating a more predictable and supportive environment, the ordinance aims to boost the local music industry and overall economy. 
• Community Relations:
• The reform seeks to foster better community relations and ensure investments in Corvallis' culture and economy are respected. 
• Addressing Past Issues:
• The previous ordinance, which relied on the "plainly audible" standard, was found to be inconsistent and negatively impacted downtown small businesses. The new criteria offer a more fair and less subjective approach to noise complaints.

What we are asking for...

• The City Council to issue an immediate pause on the enforcement of the  Noise Ordinance, and create a clear path to adopt a new Ordinance that keeps the Corvallis music, art, and event scene alive.

• When addressing the City Council, please speak about the events and times at Common Fields and other downtown venues that mean the most to you, as well as speaking to the above objectives and ending by asking the Council to act immediately by pausing the current Noise Ordinance and provide a clear path forward.
  

***UPDATE***
The Corvallis Community came out in full support of live music, community events and a thriving downtown!  We are blown away by the love in this community for Common Fields and other businesses! We are grateful to have been able to continue our business due to the outpouring of support and the actions of Mayor Maughan and the City Council. 

Even with all the support from this amazing community and the Council's decisions, we are not finished here. The City Council will be conducting research on noise ordinances in the coming weeks.  We are hoping that, with this research, they can find a reasonable ordinance that will give Common Fields and other businesses clear and objective guidelines to follow that will allow us to be within the parameters of the law and still provide this community with the music, art, culture and events that they want and deserve. Until that goal is accomplished and the ordinance is revised and passed, we must be vigilant.

In the meantime, we will be going to all the City Council meetings, and any work sessions that the Council schedules focusing on this issue.  We encourage all of you to continue to make your voices heard, educate others in our community about this issue, share the petition, and most importantly, visit your favorite businesses often!
